Arriving Somewhere New

Moving somewhere takes about six months to stop feeling like a project.

The first weeks are practical. Paperwork, finding a doctor, working out which supermarket is worth the drive. Then comes a longer stretch where life looks correct from the outside but hasn't quite settled on the inside. You have a home, you have routines. What you don't yet have is the texture of a place. The knowledge that only arrives with time and, usually, with people.

I went through this myself when I came to the Algarve. I knew the region in the way that people who've holidayed somewhere think they know it, which is to say I knew the surface. The rest took longer.

What helped wasn't any particular plan. It was a handful of conversations with people who were already embedded here. Who could say without thinking where to go on a Tuesday in October when the tourists have gone. Who knew that Santa Luzia, five minutes from Tavira and barely a detour, is the best place in Portugal for octopus, that the small local restaurants on the back streets of Tavira are better than anything on the riverside, that the food scene here draws chefs seeking a more discerning clientele and produces something that wouldn't survive in the more commercial resorts further west.

That kind of knowledge doesn't come from research. It comes from someone who's already done the time and is happy to share it.

Most people who move to the Algarve arrive with enthusiasm and a list. What they're often missing in those first months is someone who can show them the difference between the list and the reality. Not in a tour guide sense, nobody wants a running commentary on their own life. More in the way a well-connected friend might do it. Casually, over a good lunch, without any particular agenda.

That's a surprisingly rare thing to find when you're new somewhere. And it tends to make more difference than people expect.
