The Island Ferry

From Olhão you can take a ferry to the barrier islands of the Ria Formosa, Culatra, Armona, Farol, and arrive somewhere that feels structurally different from the mainland. No cars. A handful of fishermen's houses. Beaches that go on in both directions and are largely empty outside of August.

I tend to go to Culatra. It's the most inhabited of the islands, there's a proper little village with a few restaurants and an easy sense of life carrying on at its own pace. The beach on the ocean side is a walk across the island, about fifteen minutes through the dunes.
The ferry journey is fifteen minutes. The combined effect of the crossing and the arrival is considerably larger than that arithmetic suggests. Something about leaving the mainland behind, even briefly, changes the quality of attention. People slow down on the islands in a way they don't on the coast.
I've had some of the best conversations I can remember on those beaches. Nothing particularly notable happening, nowhere to be, the sound of the Atlantic. It turns out this is quite a good environment for talking about whatever actually matters to someone. Not because it's designed to be. Just because there's nothing else competing for attention.
The last ferry back to Olhão is worth knowing in advance.
